Scientific Evidences

Scientific Evidences have to do with the scientific accuracy of historical writings when scientific principals or concepts are indicated, and which can be verified. As well, do the historical writings accurately indicate the scientific concepts in advance of the concepts being discovered through more modern scientific observations?

Scientific Evidences have a special place for me as the first evidences I had ever heard about were scientific evidences. The first example, Atomic Structure, is the first scientific evidence I had ever heard anyone mention, and the first I knew of the many scientific principals that the Bible is fully compatible with.

Like prophesy, if God is outside of time and has provided us with the Bible, He would know every scientific discovery that will ever be made by humans and the Bible would be fully accurate scientifically. It is important to remember that the Bible is not a science textbook, so you won’t find specific complex scientific details and descriptions, however when it speaks on scientific concepts, it is accurate even if the verse indicating the scientific principal is brief. I believe one of the benefits of a brief description is that we can immediately grasp the concept. Have you ever had a science teacher distill a scientific concept into a single sentence that makes the concept understandable? I remember hearing that the ability to describe a complex concept in a single sentence is evidence of intelligence, and the Bible is full of these great brief descriptions.

It is truly amazing to realize that these concepts were written in the Bible hundreds and thousands of years before modern science would discover and accurately describe the concepts. These realizations give us a brief glimpse into the character and capabilities of this God who has unlimited power, knows everything, knows the future, and is everywhere. If you were to look at a great work or art, would you be more amazed by the work of art itself or the artist who created it? These written recordings should increase our amazement about God, and be a confirmation for us of His existence and a confirmation that the Bible we have can be trusted to be from this amazing God.

ATOMIC STRUCTURE

Hebrews 11:3 “By faith we understand that the Universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

This is an accurate description of the atomic structure of matter, and was written 2000 years ago. The electron microscope, necessary to view a molecule or atom, wasn’t invented until 1930.

THE VAST NUMBER OF STARS

Jeremiah 33:22 “I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.”

The earliest telescopes did not exist until the early 1600s. Looking into the night sky one can count approximately 4000 stars. This would be the approximate amount of stars anyone might be able to count living before the telescope back to the beginning of time. Until the invention of the telescope, this verse was probably a point of ridicule against those believing the Bible.

Jeremiah was written between 630 and 580.BC. This was 2500 years ago and 2000 years before telescopes could give modern science the tools to learn about the actual number of stars. When looking at the pictures remember that each spec of light in the picture is not a star but an entire distant galaxy containing an estimated 100 billion stars!

HYDROLOGIC CYCLE – The Water Cycle

Ecclesiastes 1:7 “All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again”. (written almost 3000 years ago)

The hydrologic cycle wasn’t recognized from a scientific standpoint until the 1700s. This is more than 2700 years after this verse was written.

CLOUDS HOLDING INCREDIBLE WEIGHT OF WATER

Job 26:8 “He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight”.

Have you ever stopped to think about the amount of water stored in the clouds during a rain? To give you an idea of the immense amount of water stored there, one inch of rain over one square mile equals 17.4 million gallons of water weighing 143 million pounds (about 72,000 tons), or the weight of a train with 40 boxcars. Yes, this weight is suspended in the sky before a rain!

While I wasn’t able to find a reference of the scientific discovery of the clouds ability to hold this incredible weight, it is still amazing to think that this was referenced 5000 years ago in the Bible.

WATER EVAPORATION

Job 36:27 “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams”

We usually look at water on the ground as “drying” and not what it is actually doing, evaporating. Nils Wallerius 1706-1764 was a Swedish physicist, philosopher and theologian. He was one of the first scientists to study and document the characteristics of evaporation.

GENETIC CLASSIFICATION

Genesis 1:21-31 v21 “So God created . . . and every living thing . . . according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. v24 “. . . according to their kinds . . . each according to its kind. v25 “God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.”

This is a verse that speaks against the theory – yes theory and not fact – of evolution. If the God of the Bible exists, who knows everything, and the Bible is His revelation to us, and He knows that all things are created “according their own kinds”, we can have confidence in this verse. So what do we find when observing the world around us?

The mule is a confirmation of this. The mule came about because of the desire to have a work animal which had the positive characteristics of both the horse and the donkey. This mule is the resultant animal of the female horse and a male donkey. What is interesting is that mules can’t be mated with other mules to bring about mule offspring. Mules are almost always sterile.

Another interesting thing to realize is that a mule doesn't happen naturally in the wild. It requires an input of intelligence to make it happen. So considering that a mule is almost always sterile and requires intelligence to bring about, do you think this process is a good example supporting a natural evolution or against a natural evolution?

When looking at all species we realize that there are biological limitations as to the range of physical characteristics of that species. You will never find a dat (dog-cat), or cog (cat-dog), or any other hybrid type of animal. And even when species are manipulated by human science, as in the case of the mule, they are unable to reproduce offspring “according to its kind". This verse is confirmed by modern science, and is a confirmation as to why we are able to study genetics, because genetics shows these boundaries.

The study of genetics, and the biological limitations in the range a species can change is one of the reasons why we are able classify all biological organisms into these different divisions; Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. The science of taxonomy is the science that provides this classification system has existed for over 100 years. All biological organisms have fit into this system 100%. Do you think this classification system that has existed as a model for over a century better fits the evolutionary theory of one species evolving into another, or the Bible’s description of “God made . . . according to its own kind”?

Something else to think about, is that most of the major branches of science were founded by Christian thinkers. Similar to the biological system of Taxonomy developed by Gregor Mendel, most other branches of science were founded by Christian thinkers.
